Archive for July, 2008

My youngest brother is currently spending the summer working in Los Angeles. Today, my 20 year-old brother, who was actually born in California, experienced his first earthquake when the Los Angeles area was rocked by a 5.8 earthquake. That is a pretty good jolt, but generally isn’t powerful enough to collapse bridges, houses, or highways.

However, it did cause a rather large crack in the office of his wall at work, which can be seen in the video below. Pretty crazy, if you ask me! I would expect this from a building in a non-earthquake-prone location, but in LA?!?

Today I took the bus to D.C.’s first Target, and purchased a new sofa cover for The Hovel’s second-hand, got-free-from-craigslist love seat. I decided it was just easier to buy a new one than to wash the one I currently have, which doesn’t fit the love seat that well anyway. Plus the old one is 2 years old, and was purchased off of eBay for $15. Therefore, I don’t feel like I am throwing away something of great value because I am tired of it. I decided to go for red, the color of love and passion. Perhaps this will make me love The Hovel more? I sure hope so!

This morning I had a meeting in downtown Washington, DC and decided to take advantage of this by grabbing lunch at a new place.  I had heard about this sandwich shop place for 4 years (pretty much since moving to the area), but had never eaten there.  Finally today was the day.

I was shocked when I arrived and saw the price of the sandwiches: $7.55 or $8.10, depending on which sandwich you ordered.  With tax that makes the higher-priced sandwich almost $9! It cost $8.25 with tax for a plain turkey sandwich!  Where was I?  The center of London?!?

My Fall Plans

And another!

It is only July, but I have just purchased plane tickets to Michigan to attend a U of Michigan football game in September. I went last year and had a blast tailgating and hanging out in my brother’s dorm room. This year the goal of the trip will be to stay awake long enough to go out to a few college parties with him!

A bunch of us tailgating

I Am Back….

I have fallen away from the blogosphere, but have decided to try and return.

As you bloggers are aware, maintaining an active and full blog can take a considerable amount of time. And it is amazing how much the blog takes over your life. When you really get into it, you are often thinking about how you have to post again, what you might post, and what pictures you have to back up your story. You also start looking at life as a series of blog postings–if you see something or do something cool, you aren’t just thinking about what a neat-o time you had, but you are also thinking, wow, I should put that on my blog!

This last point, about seeing life as a series of blog postings, isn’t actually all bad, because as you record these daily happenings, and if you do so consistently, you actually end up just recording your life. Recording details and thoughts and moments that you might otherwise forget. And that is the best reward, the thing that really drives me to want to, once again, maintain an active blog.

And it is with that thought that I am going to step back into the blogging pool, at least for a few days or posts.

Wish me luck!
